 1st SJMCNAA Lifetime Achievement Award: George Varghese, MD He is Professor and Chair of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Kansas University. He is from the first batch of St. John's. Resident physicians and medical students consider his knowledge base in both musculoskeletal and electrodiagnostic medicine limitless. His resident and medical student education activities are so well respected that he has won all of the major educational awards in our department and in the medical school. He also won the 2004 Distinguished Clinician Award from the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and has been repeatedly honored by the departments of Neurology and Neurosurgery for excellence in resident teaching. In addition, he supervises EMGs in both the Kansas City VA and KU facilities and supervises the resident on the University of Kansas Medical Center outpatient rotation. The University of Kansas has honored him by establishing The George Varghese, MD, Spine Learning and Resource Center and an Endowed Chair in his honor.

He is Assoc Professor of Pediatrics at University of Illinois in Chicago. He is 2nd batch St. John's Medical College. He has helped over 15 Johnites to obtain residency in his program and elsewhere. He has energized St. John's Alumni association over the years.

 

  

 

2nd Marian Kamath, MD Oration
P. Ranganath 'Ranga' Nayak, MD
Batch of 1974 will deliver the 2nd Marian Kamath Oration. Ranga is the Chief Cardiologist, Wockhardt Hospital Bangalore. He was instrumental in energizing the alumni association 'parent' body and has donated personally money and helped to get money for the alumni association for the last 3 decades. He is currently the Chair of the Alumni Association Knowledge Center Fund Raising Project.

 

 

2nd G.M.Mascarenhas Memorial Oration
Brian G.J.Pereira, MD, MBA
President and CEO of Amag Pharma, Boston, MA and is a nationally recognized expert on kidney disease and nephrology, is the editor of the widely read textbookChronic Kidney Disease, Dialysis and Transplantation and has authored over 200 scientific papers. He is also a Professor of Medicine at Tufts University School ofMedicine and at the Sackler School of Biomedical Sciences of Tufts University. He is the ex-President of National Kidney Foundation of America.

Hubert Professor of Global Health & Epidemiology at Rollins School of Public Health, Emory University in Atlanta, USA. Dr. Narayan is a product of three continents and has a richly diverse background. He is a physician-scientist trained in internal medicine, geriatric medicine, and preventive medicine, and specializes in the epidemiology and prevention of diabetes, obesity, and vascular diseases

1st C.M. Francis Memorial Award
Paul J. Thuluvath, MD.,FRCP
Professor of Surgery (Transplantation) & Medicine, The Georgetown University School of Medicine, Washington, DC; Director, Center for Liver and Biliary Diseases; Medical Director, Institute for Digestive Health and Liver Diseases, Mercy Medical Center. Dr Thuluvath was the Director of Liver Transplantation and Chief of Hepatology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

2nd Alfred Mascarenhas Memorial Award
Kevin D. Pereira, MD, MS (ORL)
Professor of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Director & Chief, Pediatric Otolaryngology, University of Maryland, Baltimore. Dr. Pereira was the chief of Pediatric Otolaryngology at the Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston and director of the Texas Pediatric Sleep Team at the University of Texas Physicians group. He was also professor of Otolaryngology and Pediatrics and vice chairman of the Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston. Dr. Pereira was a six-time recipient of the Dean's award for teaching excellence at the University. He received an honor award from the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery in 2006
