SJMC Class of 1964 Reunion: Bangalore March 2010

SJMC Class of ’64 reunion – March 2010 - Bangalore

So there we were, back in the garden city of Bangalore- home to all of us from 1964-70. 30 of 47 surviving members of the SJMC class of ’64 were together again, just like the “old” days. Almost 40 years had passed, but in just the first minutes of a magical Friday evening at the Bangalore club, those years dissolved - we were young again and having fun, like it was the only thing that mattered.

The reunion came about after some real long term planning and the untiring efforts of some key individuals. It was the right time for us. Not just because we were growing old and challenged by time and illness to a few, but because it felt like the ideal time. Many of us were longing to do this, most were willing. We had Larry Braganza’s patience, time and effort as lead organizer, Prem Pais as present Dean and a core of alumni and their families, ready to do the ground work and provide valuable assistance in the planning.

Golden Jubilee Celebrations 2013 - Vision and Plans of GJ Wing

E-mail Print PDF

Dear Johnites,

It has been a little over a year since I was asked to Chair the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of our Alma Mater- St. Johns Medical College and Hospital. The Golden Jubilee is an occasion for celebration as well as the time for all of us to look forward to the next fifty years - it would be wise to introspect and to identify lessons that we have learnt as students and practitioners and help implement the global best practices in medical education and research at SJMC. The celebrations are three years away and the Golden Jubilee Committee is glad to see that Alumni from across the globe have already started participating in various initiatives in the run-up to the event.

I have had the privilege like all of you to have spent the best years of my life at SJMC as an undergraduate student and subsequently as a teaching faculty. Being based in Bangalore , I have watched the institutional functioning from close quarters - SJMC over the years has grown from strength to strength and the students, staff, administration and the governing board have ensured that SJMC remains amongst the most preferred institutions for medical education and research in the country.

Authors Dr. Martin O’Donnell and Dr. Salim Yusuf, professors of the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine, along with colleague investigators of the INTERSTOKE study, found the following 10 risk factors to be significantly associated with 90% of the risk of stroke: high blood pressure, smoking, waist-to-hip ratio (abdominal obesity), diet, physical activity, lipids (fats), diabetes mellitus, alcohol intake, stress and depression, and heart disorders.

The study of 6,000 people in 22 countries is being published online today and then in an upcoming publication of the prestigious journal The Lancet. It will also be discussed by the authors at the World Congress of Cardiology in Beijing today. The study was coordinated by the Population Health Research Institute at McMaster University and Hamilton Health Sciences.

Stroke is the second leading cause of death worldwide, and the leading cause of acquired disability in adults in most regions. The contribution of various risk factors to the burden of stroke worldwide is unknown, particularly in countries of low and middle income where the largest burden of stroke occurs.
